Sanexen is seeking a Director, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) to support our operations across Canada. The position is based at our office in Brossard.
Job Description
Reporting to the Vice President, Governance, EHS and Enterprise Risk, the Director, Environment, Health and Safety is responsible for defining, implementing, and continuously advancing the organization’s occupational health and safety strategy. Acting as both a strategic and operational leader, this individual promotes a sustainable prevention culture that complies with legal requirements and aligns with business objectives. The role is focused on reducing risks, preventing incidents, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting managers in making responsible decisions.
Within a project-based environment operating across Canada, including remote regions, this role requires an active field presence and the ability to directly influence worksite practices.
Main responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Translate and implement the OHS strategy in alignment with business priorities.
- Support leadership decision-making by providing clear insight into risks, compliance issues, and improvement opportunities.
- Monitor and enhance EHS performance indicators while ensuring accountability and ownership among managers.
- Actively support managers in implementing EHS requirements in the field, including practices, controls, and expected behaviors.
- Strengthen the prevention culture through practical initiatives, management support, and effective field follow-up.
- Compliance and Governance
- Ensure the effective application of applicable laws and regulatory requirements in the field (CNESST, Canadian standards, OSHA, etc.) by supporting teams in their day-to-day implementation.
- Maintain clear, practical, and operationally relevant EHS policies, programs, and tools to support field operations.
- Plan and oversee audits, inspections, and targeted reviews to quickly identify gaps, support corrective actions, and strengthen worksite practices.
- Maintain constructive and rigorous relationships with regulatory authorities while supporting operations in preparing for, responding to, and meeting compliance requirements.
- Risk Management and Prevention
- Identify, assess, and prioritize operational risks in collaboration with teams to focus prevention efforts where they will have the greatest impact.
- Deploy prevention strategies tailored to project realities and support managers in their day-to-day implementation.
- Oversee incident and accident investigations, ensuring lessons learned are translated into practical improvements that prevent recurrence.
- Ensure the implementation and follow-up of sustainable corrective actions while supporting operations in maintaining long-term effectiveness.
- Field Presence and Project Support
- Conduct regular site visits across Canada, including remote regions, to directly support teams in implementing EHS requirements.
- Maintain a proactive, visible, and engaging presence in the field to strengthen adherence to expected safety practices.
- Adapt EHS practices to the specific realities of each project while ensuring effective implementation within operations.
- Support project managers in the day-to-day management of EHS matters by providing tools and guidance for proactive and consistent oversight.
- Strengthen alignment between corporate strategy and field operations by translating strategic objectives into practical worksite actions.
- Team Leadership and Influence
- Lead and engage a team of EHS professionals by fostering a proactive, operations-focused, and solution-oriented approach.
- Develop internal prevention capabilities by equipping teams to support the consistent application of EHS practices.
- Positively influence managers and stakeholders to advance EHS practices, behaviors, and accountability.
- Collaborate closely with all stakeholders, including field teams, to ensure interventions are aligned, practical, and actionable.
- Continuous Improvement
- Analyze EHS data to identify trends, establish priorities, and focus interventions where they can generate the greatest impact.
- Prepare value-added strategic reports for senior leadership, highlighting key issues, progress, and improvement opportunities.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives that support operations, strengthen EHS practices, and drive sustainable results.
Qualifications required
Sought Profile
- Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in occupational health and safety.
- Experience working in multi-site or remote operational environments.
- Strong leadership skills with proven credibility in the field.
- Excellent knowledge of Quebec occupational health and safety regulations and standards.
- Ability to influence and drive change within complex environments.
- Strong adaptability and autonomy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Sound judgment, attention to detail, and strategic thinking.
- Specific Requirements
- Availability for occasional travel across Canada.
- Ability to work and intervene in remote locations.
- Valid driver’s license.
Assets
- Significant management experience and experience in project-based environments.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and standards across Canada and the United States.
- Experience in the industrial, construction, or environmental sectors.
Proficiency in French and English:
